Sustainable Packaging: Our Sugarcane Tubes

Think all plastic tubes are the same? Definitely not. At Codex Beauty, ours are plant-based and reduce greenhouse gas emissions—a major feat in the beauty industry.

At Codex Beauty, the tubes that house our products are as well made and innovative as the formulas inside. Here’s why: Our scientists went beyond the standard-issue containers to find ones made with green polyethylene, a plastic resin produced using sugarcane ethanol, which is a renewable raw material. Why this matters? Traditional polyethylene is produced from fossil fuels (think oil or natural gas). By being plant-based, the production of green polyethylene captures and fixes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere—actually helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. So yes, every time we create a tube we help the earth. The reduction in carbon footprint ranges from about 50% to 80% depending on the size of the tube.

These eco-friendly creations feel just the same as regular containers, too. In studies, green polyethylene maintains the same properties, performance and versatility as the fossil-based option—and it’s recyclable through the same recycling chain as traditional polyethylene. So once you squeeze out the last drop of your Bia Day Cream or Bia Exfoliating Wash you can put it in the recycling bin as per usual.

Also exciting: All of our tubes carry the Carbon Footprint Standard’s CO₂e Assessed Product stamp of approval. The Carbon Footprint Standard is an internationally recognized certification for demonstrating low carbon credentials. And next year, Codex Beauty will partner with an international recycling corporation to facilitate the return of its primary and secondary packaging to help minimize both ocean plastic and landfill waste. It’s just another way to feel good about your beauty products. Because what’s on the inside—and the outside—matters to us all.
